When people hear the word trauma, they often think of one major, life-threatening event. But trauma can take many forms. Sometimes it comes from a single experience, while other times it develops through repeated experiences of feeling unsafe, powerless, betrayed, or unsupported.Trauma can affect the way you see yourself, your relationships, your body, and the world around you. It can also show up years after an experience has ended. You may recognize yourself in one of the categories below—or several. Your experience doesn't have to fit neatly into one category for it to be worth exploring in therapy. If something you've experienced continues to affect your relationships, sense of safety, emotions, confidence, or everyday life, you deserve the opportunity to explore it with support. Therapy can be a space to make sense of what happened, understand the ways it may still be affecting you, and develop a greater sense of safety and connection in your life.
